LAPOLICE HISTORY

Receipts for Arrest of Indians

These are receipts the city marshal received for the arrest of Indians. I believe they received a dollar an Indian. The Indians were typically sentenced to the chain gang because they normally did not have any money to pay the fine so they worked it off. This was a bad period in our history, we had forced labor by paying the marshal for each Indian arrested. They, in turn, would be sentenced to the chain gang which were rented out to businessmen or whoever needed cheap labor for the day or two. The city made money on the forced labor.
